St George’s Grenada; July 14, 2020: Following a short postponement due to the coronavirus pandemic, Republic Bank National Learn to Swim Week 2020 was held July 6th -10th with a record 747 children and adults taking the opportunity to obtain free basic swimming lessons.

Volunteer swim coaches came together at eleven locations throughout Grenada to offer a week of basic water safety skills to the participants. Chief organizer, Ms. Deb Eastwood of Grenada Youth Adventurers highlights this programme as one of the most successful since its inception. She stated: “This year attracted 126 adults, the highest number of adult participants in the programme.” We were without the usual volunteers from the USA and UK; however, we take our hats off to the 130 local volunteers, including some returning cruise ship workers who stepped up to offer their services as volunteer swim coaches for the week.”

Our partnership with GYA is in its sixth consecutive year. Commenting on this year’s successful outcome, General Manager – Operations at Republic Bank, Mr. Clifford Bailey said: “We commend the Grenada Youth Adventurers, and in particular chief coordinator, Ms. Deb Eastwood, for making it possible to stage the Republic Bank National Learn to Swim Week, despite the short approval period between the event and the approval from the Ministry of health. We are extremely proud to partner with GYA in this wonderful project, to ensure that as many Grenadians possess this life saving skill, while promoting healthy lifestyle.

This event is normally held during the Easter holidays, annually and forms part of a broader initiative to “Get Grenada Swimming”. To date over 4000 persons have benefitted from the programme, with free swim lessons continuing every Saturday on specific locations.
